Consumer Video Tapes

Between the late 1970's and the mid 2000's, there were many different types of Home Video Camcorder Tapes. The primary cause of multiple tape types, or “formats” was an attempt to improve the video and audio quality of the recordings. Better picture and sound recording required a more advanced video tape. The other main reason was that major electronics companies were trying to shrink the size and weight of video camcorders. People were more likely to video record an event if their camcorder was small and light. This explains why the tapes got smaller as time went by.
